What is a CT-guided biopsy?

When is a CT-guided biopsy recommended?

CT-guided biopsies are typically recommended in several scenarios:

• Suspicious lung nodules or masses: When imaging studies, such as X-rays or CT scans, reveal abnormal areas in the lungs that need further evaluation to determine if they are benign or malignant.
• Unexplained pleural effusions: When fluid accumulates around the lungs without a clear cause, a biopsy may help in diagnosing conditions such as infections, cancer, or inflammatory diseases.
• Interstitial lung disease: To diagnose various types of lung diseases that affect the interstitium (the tissue and space around the air sacs of the lungs).

What does CT-guided biopsy involve?

During a CT-guided biopsy, a very thin needle is used to take a tissue sample. The needle is guided into the body and monitored with the help of a CT scan so that very specific areas can be assessed. Once the needle reaches the abnormal tissue, a sample is collected. The tissue sample will be retrieved. It will be sent to a laboratory for further testing.

The needle is then removed, and pressure is applied to the site to stop any bleeding. After the procedure, the patient is monitored for a short period to ensure there are no immediate complications, such as bleeding or pneumothorax (collapsed lung). A follow-up chest X-ray or CT scan may be performed to check for any post-procedural issues.
