Tracheal stenosis is a condition which occurs when the trachea narrows as a result of an injury, tumour, infection, or an autoimmune disorder. Tracheal dilation refers to a procedure in which the trachea is widened with a balloon or tracheal dilator.
This provides temporary relief of uncomfortable symptoms, and also allows your doctor to see how much of your trachea has been affected by the condition. During the tracheal dilation procedure, your doctor will also be able to determine the cause of your tracheal stenosis.
During tracheal laser surgery, your doctor will make use of lasers in order to remove any scar tissue that has been caused by your condition. The surgery provides relief from uncomfortable symptoms. Depending on the cause of the stenosis, the use of silicone or metal stents (small tubes that are placed in the airways) may provide a more permanent solution.
